United States Census, 1910 for Mary J Owen

Documentation that Mary Jane Turner's parents were born in Alabama.

Not sure if this is a anomaly of the database, but the Herring family, Widowed mother Georgie and her 7 kids, are a Black family. She is listed as head of household. According to this record, they share a family number, but are on adjoining pages.

One thing that confuses me here is the presence of William in the household, unless this is Grandpa's brother Archie. I guess it must be, but how do you get "Archie" out of "William M?"

Noah's father died when he was about 11. His mother Mary (Mollie) married Mr. Stough, who, apparently died not much later. I believe her married name was Turner.

If Mollie was 47 in 1920, that would make her year of birth 1873 or so. My mom says that her own mother used to call her a "Mollie-Turner-looking thing." Doesn't sound like much of a compliment. I have a picture of the family, though. She was perfectly lovely.

When I was looking for the location of Mignon Town, I saw a web page that said the area was later named Sylacauga. Not sure if it was the previous name for Sylacauga or if the area was incorporated into Sylacauga.

Bertha Lee Ellison Owens

Bertha Lee Ellison Owens was born in Alabama. My mother told me that her date of birth was "adjusted" by her family so that she could attend school when she was 4. That would mean that she was actually born in 1906, and not in 1904, as documented in her Social Security records.

Bertha Owens married Noah Owens in 1929. They were married until her death in 1972. She died and was buried in California. Bertha and Noah had 9 children, 7 of whom lived until adulthood. They lived in Alabama, Texas, and California.

Noah Austin Owens

Noah Austin Owens was my mother's father. He was born in Alabama in 1904, and died in Pomona, California, in 1981.

About 1929 he married Bertha Lee Ellison. They were married until her death in 1972. They had 9 children, 7 of whom lived to maturity. Their eldest and youngest children both died in early childhood.

These are their children:

Leon Owens (1930-1970)
Roland Owens
Robert Owens
Shirley Lee Owens Delaney Tessler
William "Bud" Owens
Thomas Leon Owens
Lillian Ruth Owens Hogstad Heath

I believe that I have listed them correctly in the order of their birth. All of the family has passed away.

Arlie (Arlee), the eldest child that died, appears on the 1930 census. The youngest child, that also died in early childhood was named John.

Lillian Owens Heath

Lillian Owens Hogstad Heath was my mother. She was born in Alabama on November 2, 1946, and died in Alabama on March 28, 2003. When she was a child, her family lived in Rockford and Montgomery, Alabama. When she was a young teen, her family moved to Texas. A couple of years later, her parents moved to California, but she elected to stay with her sister in Texas in order to finish high school. In 1965, she graduated from high school and moved to California.

I was born in Los Angeles in 1967. We lived in Louisiana, where my sister was born, for a brief time. Some time in 1970 or '71, we moved back to California. We lived in California until 1981, when we moved to Louisiana.

In '85 or '86, after I had graduated from high school, she moved back to California with my younger sister. Within a few years, my sister moved back to Louisiana and eventually, my mother moved to the UK.

She went to the UK to marry Stephen Valentine Heath. She lived there until 1990, when she moved back to Louisiana. She lived in Louisiana and Alabama for the rest of her life.

My Alabama Peeps

I think that the reason I am so interested in my heritage is that I am someone who has had almost no contact with my father or his family. So I am interested in knowing and documenting who I am and where I came from. Luckily, my mother's family has lived in central Alabama since at least the 1830s, so I have been able to find many documents related to them.

Having gathered a ton of genealogical information on my family, and lost it when my ex got custody of a computer in our divorce, I wanted to redo my work in some format that would be less susceptible to being lost or wiped out. So here I am.
